In post-war Hong Kong, set in 1962, Chow Mo-wan (played by Tony Leung) and Su Li-zhen (played by Maggie Cheung) are two people who meet by chance in a crowded city. Their first encounter occurs in a convenience store, where they both rent a room in the same building. As the days go by, their paths continue to cross, and they begin to form a bond. Chow Mo-wan, a journalist, is writing a science fiction novel in his spare time. Su Li-zhen, an elegant and refined secretary, is a beautiful and stylish woman. As they continue to run into each other, they begin to develop a strong connection, exchanging stories, ideas, and emotions. As their friendship deepens, Chow Mo-wan and Su Li-zhen find themselves drawn to each other, but they both have partners who are frequently absent. Mr. Chow's wife is often away on business, while Su Li-zhen's husband is working abroad. Despite the strong attraction between them, they struggle to express their feelings openly.
